Conroe is the perfect blend of starry

nights and city lights. The fastest growing city in Texas, Conroe has so much to offer. The centerpiece of the city, Lake Conroe, is the perfect place for rest and relaxation-or fun and exciting adventure. Bordering the 22,000 acre lake is 156 miles of shoreline and 254.8 square miles of national forest. In the forest you’ll find the longest continuous hiking trail in the state of Texas, The Lone Star Hiking Trail. Adventure awaits along the 96 mile long hiking trail, and overflows into the additional 32 miles of loop and crossover trails. Discover the Red-cockaded woodpecker in the Jones State Forest; it is one of the few places you will ever be able to sight the endangered bird. If birding isn’t your thing, bring a picnic and enjoy the Texas weather. Speaking of Texas, the Texas history available to indulge in Conroe is unbelievable. Check out the Heritage Museum of the Lone Star Flag Park and Outdoor Museum to see 13 battle and rally flags that have flown over Texas, and the 13 foot tall “Texian” with its secrets to share. Feeling hungry? Conroe offers amazing local culinary hot spots and three craft breweries, a winery, and a distillery. Make sure to see them all. Cap off the night with a stroll around downtown. Discover the local artisans in the art galleries and art benches that line downtown Conroe, and enjoy the sounds of live music at several venues. Be sure to mark your calendar for our signature Conroe events- they are worth the trip!

SPIRIT OF TEXAS BANK

The Lone Star Flag became the official state flag in 1845 when Texas joined the Union. Recognizable throughout the world, few know Montgomery County native, Dr. Charles B. Stewart, was the designer. Visitors can view a copy of the original drawing as well as learn Conroe’s rich history of the area dating back to the 1800s, including once productive tobacco fields and the 1931 discovery of oil, all at the Heritage Museum of Montgomery County. Onsite is the The Roughneck House that once served as a bunkhouse for oilfield workers, along with a recently renovated Sears & Roebuck Craftsman-style home, the Strake-Gray House, used by the foremen. The Lone Star Monument and Historical Flag Park, showcases reproductions of 13 battle and rally flags that flew during Texas’s fight for independence along with The Texian, a 14’ bronze sculpture depicting a soldier of the Texas Revolution. The Park is open year round. On April 21st visitors can share in the annual Flag Replacement Ceremony honoring the anniversary of the Battle

Huntsville Museums:

HUNTSVIL SAM HOUSTON STATUE

A visit to the world’s tallest statue of an American hero offers a great perspective of Huntsville. A tribute to courage, the Sam Houston Statue was designed and constructed by artist David Adickes. He dedicated the statue to the City of Huntsville on October 22, 1994. It is the world’s tallest statue of an American Hero at 67 feet tall on a 10-foot sunset granite base.

known as the Walker County Historical Museum, was built in 1862. It is built in the Greek Revival style, popular in Huntsville and in the South at that time. The Gibbs family was often visited at the home by personal friend Sam Houston. The house has been the home to several generations of Gibbs and Powell families. Female boarders attending Sam Houston Normal Institute in the Nineteenth Century roomed upstairs.

THE MUSEUM OF TEXAS HANDMADE FURNITURE

Beginning in 1844, an estimated 10,000 German immigrants came to Texas lured by the promise of vast lands, abundant resources,

and personal liberties. Germans enthusiastically came and adopted their new home. Farmers, businessmen, minor nobility, and skilled tradesmen made the voyage. Combining skill and craftsmanship with the natural resources available in their new home, they developed a style of furniture, known as Texas Biedermeier, and influenced Texas decorative arts. The museum exhibits one of the largest collections of this Biedermeier furniture style created by these early pioneer artisans. www.texashandmadefurniture.org

TAKE ME TO THE THEATRE

A theatre ticket can get you even closer to your favorite musician or a chance to listen to words of your favored playwright. The Crighton Theatre, the “Crown Jewel of Montgomery County” has been a delight for music lovers, theatergoers and historians for over 80 years. Every seat is a perfect seat in Conroe’s intimate Owen Theatre, home to The Players Theatre Company. Renovations to the once 1946 car dealership now accommodate sold-out theatrical performances.

ART, MUSIC & CULTURE MUSIC IN THE AIR

Conroe is fast becoming a destination for great live music. The historic downtown offers unique venues like the Red Brick Tavern and The Corner Pub that provide crowd-pleasing local, regional and national favorites year-round. Montgomery County is proud to be home to the annual Young Texas Artists Music Competition where ambitious young musicians have proven their dedication and determination to excel in their highly sought after fields. Free Concerts happen at Heritage Place! Invite your friends and family to the first Thursdays of the month from April through September for hours of music. Bring your chairs or your favorite blanket for a lawn seat at this familyfriendly activity.

AN ART-CENTRIC DOWNTOWN

Visitors are inspired by the talent of Craig Campobella, Conroe’s Flag Park visionary and bronze sculptor known for such works as the busts of Dr. Charles B. Stewart, designer of the Lone Star Flag, and the likeness of renowned trauma surgeon Dr. James “Red” Duke. Step inside Campobella’s Bronze Sculpture on N. Main. Education is a top priority for the Conroe Art League and it’s over 250 talented members that call the Gallery at the Madeley Building home. The 100-year old building provides a pleasant artist/gallery setting for a bounty of artists’ works, ongoing art shows, classes and workshops. And on your search for all-things-art, don’t forget a stop at the Conroe Legends Mural Wall on Metcalf St. at N. Main.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT Locals can tell you that there is live music every day in Conroe…somewhere! From an acoustic guitar, orchestra music, open mic night, or a full band playing a Sunday Brunch, Conroe is known for the talented musicians that play at the restaurants and local hangouts throughout the town. Sundays are fun days beginning with Gospel Sunday Brunch in Downtown Conroe at the Red Brick Tavern. Every Sunday beginning at 11:00am you can hear live music in an intimate setting. The food is spectacular too. How about a casual come and go Sunday afternoon? The Backwoods Saloon is your place to hear local talent take the stage during Open Mic Night starting at 4:00pm. Did you spend the day on Lake Conroe? Back your boat or vehicle into Papa’s on the Lake for an afternoon wind down and get ready for Monday from 3:00pm-7:00pm with a live performance. If you want live music every day of the week-Downtown Conroe is the place to be. The Corner Pub hosts an open mic night Mondays through Thursdays with host musicians inviting artists to sign up by 8:30pm and music goes live by 9:00pm. Southern Disposition performs every Tuesday at The Red Brick Tavern. (RBT) Nate Nelson Acoustic is in the line-up for Wednesdays, and local acclaimed country singer/songwriter Buck Yeager takes the stage every Thursday for RBT. And the newest venue, Pacific Yard House, joins the Downtown Conroe Music Destinations with live performances every Friday and Saturday evenings with The Corner Pub and Red Brick Tavern. Craft breweries and local wineries are a great place to relax and hear music. Southern Star Brewery, B-52 Brewing, and Blue Epiphany offer events and live music several times during each month. Check their event schedule, bring your friends, and even your 4-legged friends for good times with your new favorite brew or glass of vino. And not to miss is the First Thursday Free Concerts at Heritage Park April through September hosted by the City of Conroe Parks and Recreation. Get your lawn chair, sit on the grass, and enjoy the ambiance of Downtown Conroe with the locals. Music is Conroe!
