Theodore Roosevelt Island is a forested memorial to the American president who founded the National Park System. The trails around the island offer a peek at Arlington’s skyscrapers, and across the river, Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown and Foggy Bottom neighborhoods. The Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove honors the American president and his wife, Lady Bird Johnson, who were dedicated to beautifying the country through conservation and urban renewal. This peaceful oasis offers riverside views of the urban landscape. The Navy and Merchant Marine Memorial is a tribute to Americans serving in World War I. The sculpture shares the shoreline with the Mount Vernon Trail and has unobstructed views of the city’s skyline. Arlington National Cemetery memorializes military conflicts, presidents, Supreme Court justices and other notables. Arlington House overlooks a wide swath of Washington, D.C.’s significant landmarks. Located at the entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, the Military Women’s Memorial honors and tells the stories of women, past and present, who serve in the United States military. It is home to the newly unveiled sculpture, “The Pledge,” capturing a moment of mutual respect and love between a female dog handler and her Belgian Malinois. The Marine Corps War Memorial symbolizes the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. From this vantage point, three famous buildings line up in perfect synchronicity: the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and United States Capitol.

EXPERIENCE ARLINGTON’S AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE
Arlington’s historic sites provide context to the Black experience in America. Begin with The Black Heritage Museum of Arlington on Columbia Pike and the nearby John Robinson, Jr. Town Square, a soon-to-be completed centerpiece of the historic Green Valley neighborhood, settled by free African Americans before the Civil War began. At Arlington National Cemetery, learn about the Freedman’s Village, a community established to provide homes for emancipated and formerly enslaved people. Pick up a cemetery map to visit the final resting places of notables like Thurgood Marshall, Joe Lewis and Medgar Evers. Other local sites include the circa-1791 boundary stone in Benjamin Banneker Park, named for the Black surveyor/inventor who laid Washington, D.C.’s boundary markers. Arlington House, on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery, is a former plantation that pre-dates the Civil War.

Ballston is a thriving urban neighborhood with innovative research agencies and high-tech companies. Wired for free public WiFi throughout, Ballston is home to the Northern Virginia campuses of The George Washington University, Virginia Tech Research Center and Marymount University, as well as the Arlington campus of George Mason University in Virginia Square. Home to three major retail centers, Pentagon City is a hotspot for shopping and dining. This neighborhood is within walking distance of the Air Force Memorial, National 9/11 Pentagon Memorial, and The Pentagon.
