Independence Fest

Flower Mound derives its name from an actual landmark that has as many legends attached to it as Texas has tall tales. The Mound rises 650 feet above sea level and stands 50 feet above the surrounding countryside. While there are few unchallenged facts about this natural wonder, Texas’ eminent historian, the late A.C. Greene, believed it received its name in the 1840s because of an unusual amount of wildflowers that grew on it. This area was part of the great American Blackland Prairie that ran from Canada to the Rio Grande and from the Rockies to the Mississippi. Only 1,000 acres remain of the original 20 million known as the Tall Grass Prairie. The 13 acres was deeded to the nonprofit Mound Foundation in order to preserve the land in its natural state forever. Located at the intersection of FM 2499 and FM 3040, legend suggests this was a sacred Indian burial ground and Mother Nature abided with strong winds to prevent any structure from being built there (flower-mound.com).

Take a relaxing break at any of Flower Mound’s inviting spas, including Cloud 9 Salon and Spa (cloud9salon.com) or Sutera Spa (suteraspa.com) for a full range of pampering treatments. The whole family will enjoy Flower Mound’s special events, including Independence Fest (flower-mound. com). Past celebrity entertainers have included 38 Special, Kansas, Rick Springfield and Smash Mouth along with fireworks, art show, classic car show, children’s activities and food booths. Sign up for Dorothy’s Dash, a 5K run to benefit Multiple Sclerosis Society research, or marvel at decorated floats and marching bands as they help ring in the holiday spirit at the annual nighttime Christmas Parade and tree lighting ceremony (flower-mound.com).

In addition to the lake trails, Flower Mound has more than 59 miles of multi-use trails linking together parks, schools, businesses and neighborhoods, as well as two miles of equestrian trails. For a different type of experience with green space, play a round at one of Flower Mound’s great golf courses, some of which are regarded as the best in Texas. With its gently rolling hills, Tour 18 (tour18-dallas. com) replicates some of the most challenging holes from renowned courses in the United States, including Augusta National’s Amen Corner in Georgia and Cherry Hills No. 1 in Englewood, Colorado. Designed by PGA Tour golfer D.A. Weibring, Bridlewood Golf Club (bridlewoodgolf.com) is known for its natural beauty and challenging play for all types of golfers. This course was picked as one of the best upscale golf clubs in the U.S. by a Golf Digest publication. Flower Mound also boasts an abundance of shopping and dining options. Retailers range from national department stores to specialty boutiques. Robertson’s Creek is a one-stop spot for everything
