Get an Amarillo Welcome!

With friendly and knowledgeable staff and heeps of brochures and information on all things Texas, the Travel Information Center (TIC) is the perfect place to start your visit.

Knowledgeable travel counselors staff the center and welcome visitors to Texas. They will help with routings, points of interest, events, and even road conditions.

The Travel Information Center distributes TxDOT travel literature, including the Texas State Travel Guide, Texas Official Travel Map, Texas Public Campgrounds and Texas Events Calendar. Additional travel literature is available, including maps, pamphlets, booklets and brochures from local and statewide destinations, points of interest, special events, lodging and restaurants.

The Travel Information Center features 24-hour security surveillance and 24-hour restroom access. While you’re there snap a picture with with their “Welcome to Texas” installation.

Cadillac Ranch

Stopping visitors since 1974, this iconic art instalation features ten Cadillacs buried nose-down in a field at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza. Visitors are encouraged to leave their mark with spray paint and a little creativity.

The Big Texan

This kitschy, 1960's saloon-style steakhouse offers patrons a free 72-oz. steak challenge, serenading cowboys & a lively beer garden.

Cowgirls and Cowboys in the West

The beautiful Los Cedros Ranch is a working ranch located on the rim of Palo Duro Canyon that offers horseback riding and private chuck wagon meals catered by real cowgirls and cowboys.

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

The second largest canyon in the United States is located just 22 miles south of Amarillo. Not only is it the most breathtaking park in the Southwest, it also has some of the best hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking found anywhere in the US!

Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum

Visit Texas’ largest history museum and go back in time through their life-sized Pioneer Town, 14,000 years of history from dinosaurs to conconquistadors, and more than two million artifacts.

Starlight Ranch

Outdoor live music and festival venue housing some of country music’s biggest names underneath the biggest sky in Texas.

Insider Tips

Some of my favorite things to do in Amarillo are baseball games at Hodgetown, music at the Amarillo Symphony, and of course attending one of the many rodeos here like Coors Ranch Rodeo or WRCA.

I love going to Palace Coffee. Palace’s convenient locations allow me to meet with friends and professional contacts in different parts of the city. When I’m not at Palace, I scratch my fitness itch at Verdure Fitness. The sauna and steam room are a must after a good workout. I think Amarillo’s secret weapon is the ease of travel through the town. I can get to all my favorite places in fifteen minutes or less from anywhere in town.

My favorite gem is the Downtown Dining District in Center City. The Downtown Dining District has 30 places to eat. These restaurants are locally owned by enterprising entrepreneurs. If you want to eat where the locals eat, go downtown.

A place I wish people frequented more is Skate Plex! I love going there on Thursday nights because it’s adult/college night! There’s something so nostalgic about tying on those roller skates, feeling the breeze flow through your hair as your zoom past people. It’s a must activity to do in Amarillo and they also play groovy

“I love walking down 6th street on the weekends. Going through all the antique shops, stopping at The 806 for coffee and snacks, sitting on their patio and just people watching. It feels nice to see people outside walking around. At night many places on 6th offer live music and host small events as well. We have beautiful history/ architecture here to view.

Districts

ROUTE 66 HISTORIC DISTRICT

Amarillo serves as the homestretch along the famous highway, Route 66, that begins in Chicago and swings in a wide arch all the way down to Los Angeles. Along Amarillo’s Route 66 Historic District, travelers will find a mix of historic and modern experiences. See more on page 17.

DOWNTOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT

Known for its rich history, the Downtown Historic District is home to Amarillo’s early roots and story. You’ll find historical buildings such as the Bivin’s Home built by one of the first families to settle in Amarillo and the recently revived 1927 Barfield building turned boutique hotel. Downtown is adorned with a plethora of public art pieces and murals, shops, lounges, and dining. If you’re in the mood for some fun, catch a game at the award-winning Hodgetown Stadium, or play vintage arcade games at Lit Arcade Bar.

SHOPPING DISTRICTS

Wolflin Square + Wolflin Village

Explore local retailers all in one area. You can find anything from boutique bargains, high-end fashion, modern home furnishings, leather goods, and fine jewelery.

Shops at Soncy

Once you’ve explored the host of locally owned shops, shop big at the city’s major shopping centers to find the wellknown brands you love in the Shops at Soncy and Westgate Mall.

Historic District

Explore Amarillo’s Historic Route 66 vintage stores, antique stores, and more. If you’re in a hurry, head west to From 6th Collective. Shop over 50 local vendors all in one space.

AMARILLO CULTURAL DISTRICT

The Amarillo Cultural District celebrates Amarillo’s diverse creativity and vibrant future as a cultural destination in the Texas Panhandle. In 2016, the Texas Commission on the Arts officially recognized the Amarillo Cultural District as one of 40 districts in the state. It is a destination for visual, performing, culinary and architectural arts.

Route 66, the road that shaped America, is turning 100 years old in 2026! The annual Texas Route 66 Festival will kick off years of celebrations starting in 2023 leading up to the centennial of Historic Route 66. The ten days are packed with events along the Texas route including classic car shows, Texas Route 66 bus tours, cattle drives, parades, music festivals, and a grand finale festival on Amarillo’s Route 66 Historic District.

That open road calls, once again, bidding you to bathe in the light of neon signs, to order something comforting from a mom-and-pop, and to indulge in the nostalgia of a bygone era. And so, here, in Amarillo – the largest city on the 178-mile, OK-TX-NM portion of Route 66 – we’re bringing it back. This is the year to get your kicks on Route 66. Go vacation-mode on the Mother Road and experience the Great American Road Trip - because there’s no road and nowhere you’ll feel freer.

Start your sojourn in our Route 66 Historic District, located on 6th Ave. between Georgia & Western Streets. Here, a mile of open road and packed roadsides unfold over art galleries, antique shops, collectible stores, craft and specialty shops, restaurants and bars.

Begin at the Texas Route 66 Visitor Center and then fill up on cold beer, great eats, and live music at Goldenlight Cantina. Mosey down to the Blue Sage Art Gallery for a stoneware souvenir and uncover the den of uniquities at Aunt Eek's Books & Curiosities. Then, stop in at The Nat Antique Mall, which once welcomed live musical acts including Elvis Presley.

Finally, take your nostalgia to Bill’s Backyard Classics, an ode to American craftsmanship that eclipses 100 cars and trucks dating from 1920 to 2012 – from Model As and street rods to military Jeeps and Corvettes. Round it out with a visit to the RV Museum at Jack Sisemore Traveland, home to the oldest Fleetwood in existence, the first Itasca motor home, and many other steps back in time.

Jack Sisemore RV Museum is a consistent favorite on TripAdvisor! Step back in time and enjoy RVs, camping, and lifestyle exhibits from the 1920’s through today. Exhibits include the oldest Airstream in the world and an RV used in the movie RV starring Robin Williams.

Texas Air and Space Museum honors the area’s long history of flight through preservation and education. The museum features all sorts of aircrafts and artifacts and a personal tour of the facility.

Amarillo Railroad Museum features an operational HO scale layout depicting Texas Panhandle Railroads circa 1952 - 1970, a G scale outdoor Garden Railway, and historic railroad cars used by the US Government.

American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame & Museum

This museum is a beautiful way to learn about the horses that settled the West. It features western art, a history of the American Quarter Horse, and educational exhibits.

Bill's Backyard Classics

For anyone with a place in their heart for fine old cars! Get your motor started, grab your family, and head this way for some American history and craftsmanship.

AMoA is a focal point for the region’s thriving arts community, attracting regional and national art shows. The museum has over 2,000 objects in their permanent exhibit including the extensive Price Collection of Asian Art and Train Coming In by Georgia O’Keeffe.

History & Culture

Experience rich Hispanic culture and traditions in the El Barrio Neighborhood or venture to North Heights to discover Amarillo’s oldest neighborhood and some of the best BBQ in town. The Downtown Historic District is home to Amarillo’s most treasured historical buildings and an array of things to do and eat. For diverse cuisine head to Eastridge, or get your kicks on Route 66’s Historical District, located in San Jacinto.

Goodnight Historical Center

Located less than one mile north of the caprock of Palo Duro Canyon, GHC boasts broad vistas and native wildlife. Roaming next to the home is a herd of bison, descendants of the orphan bison that the Goodnights saved as a remnant of the original Southern Plains Herd.

Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument

This monument highlights ancient flint used by Native Americans for tools and weapons.

Llano Cemetery

has been Amarillo’s principal burying ground since the 1890s and many of the city’s pioneer families are laid to rest here. The cemetery regularly has tours including their annual historic tour in October.

Madame Queen

The only 2-10-4 Texas-type locomotive built in 1930 for the Plains division of the Santa Fe Railway.

Coors Cowboy Club Cattle Drive

Over 60 longhorns along with other motorized groups and riders take over Polk Street for a parade in Downtown Amarillo. Enjoy live staged Oldwest shootouts performed by the Cowboy Fast Draw Association.

Texas Route 66 Festival

The Texas Route 66 Festival is an event kicking off the years of celebrations leading up to the centennial of Historic Route 66. There will be a variety of vendors, live music, contests, tours and more.
